Dr. Philip Manfield: I am a psychotherapist with over forty years clinical experience. Although a significant portion of my professional activity is devoted to EMDR training and consultation with other therapists, I still reserve half my hours for direct provision of treatment to clients. Over the years I have worked with and helped hundreds of individuals and couples through a wide range of difficulties. My style is respectful, interactive and dynamic,  I've learned that there are a lot of ways to help, to heal and to promote personal growth, and that no particular approach fits every person or situation. For example, for individuals with problems arising from recent traumatic events or from childhood trauma or neglect, whose parents may have been inconsistent or worse, I often combine EMDR with cognitive behavioral and psychodynamic strategies. My office is in Alblany, CA across the creek from El Cerrito Plaza. (I am no longer seeing clients in Walnut Creek, CA or Berkeley, CA.)

Dr. Manfield has been licensed as a marriage and family therapist since 1975. He has authored or edited five books about psychotherapy and the use of EMDR. An international trainer, he has taught in the US, Canada, South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Middle East. In January, 2001, he was honored to be featured in the book, "3 Minute Consultations with America's Greatest Psychotherapists." (Jason Aronson, Publishers) He is currently Northern California Regional Coordinator for the EMDR International Association. "EMDR Up Close. provides a rare opportunity to get inside the mind of a talented and experienced EMDR therapist as he works with both straightforward and complex therapeutic challenges. Dr. Manfield provides verbatim transcripts with commentary at each choice point that explains why he chooses to use one intervention over another, what cues he is attending to, and what language he employs for his interventions. This book would be valuable for both beginning and seasoned EMDR therapists. It will assist newly trained therapists in developing their capacity to understand how to handle the challenges that inevitably arise during EMDR sessions. It would also be valuable for advanced practitioners because it would expose them to Dr. Manfield’s elaborations and refinements of Francine Shapiro’s brilliant protocol." - Lewis Engel, PhD is an EMDR Consultant, Contibutor to EMDR Casebook, and author of Imaginary Crimes: Why We Punish Ourselves and How to Stop

"What I most enjoyed about this book is the sense that I was listening to a master clinician, and watching him put all of his skills to work in the service of EMDR. Basically, watching a lifetime of experience.  It is more complete on this topic (resourcing) than anything else I am aware of. I will be recommending it as a primary source on resource development." - Robert Tinker, PhD, Co-author with Sandra Wilson, PhD: Through the Eyes of a Child: EMDR with Children, (W.W.Norton, 1999)

A Portuguese language version is also available.

"This volume opens the door and allows us to view the practices of a diverse group of seasoned EMDR clinicians.  EMDR Casebook allows readers to consider the implications of an integrated, focused therapeutic approach to the treatment of a wide range of often resistant pathologies. It also extends an open invitation to readers to further expand the EMDR knowledge-base in terms of both innovative theoretical and preactical applications." - Francine Shapiro, Ph.D.

"I found this to be a highly readable volume and recommend it to clinicians interested in using EMDR for an expanding range of patient concerns." - Donnah Nickerson-Reiti, M.D., in Psychiatric Services

(A German language version of Extending EMDR entitled, Innovative EMDR - Ansatze, is now available from Junfermann Publishers).   You can order or find out more about Extending EMDR or EMDR Casebook by clicking here on |

CONTACT Dr. Manfield directly to inquire about available spaces in ongoing groups or for individual consultation:

Dr. Manfield can be reached by telephone at 925-944-0805 or 925-944-0805, or by email at pem49.jpg (15594 bytes)  (the first three letters are "pem")

The fee for individual consultation is $200/hr.

HOW TO ENROLL: People interested in enrolling in a telephone consultation group should select a group and email Dr. Manfield

at pem49.jpg (15594 bytes) (the first three letters are "pem") indicating their interest in the selected group. Assuming there is space in the group, Dr. Manfield will

email back that you have been enrolled in the group, and you will receive an e-invitation with instructions, including the telephone

dial-in number, the access code that allows you to join the discussion, and arrangements for payment. It is requested that participants pay for ten

group meetings in advance. (Alternate arrangements can be made.) While enrolled, participants are responsible for payment for all meetings,

whether or not they are able to attend. Absense from two consecutive groups without communicating intent to remain in the group may result

in a participant being removed from the group.

HOW TO UNENROLL: A week's notice is required for withdrawal from a group. Any unused funds after withdrawal will be refunded. If group

attendance is purely to satisfy the training requirement of 10 consultation hours, an attendee may want to withdraw from a group once that

requirement is satisfied. This must be communicated explicitly.  Requesting a certificate of completion is not equivalent to withdrawal from a

group, nor is exhausting of prepaid group fees. To request a certificate of completion, send an email to your consultant with the dates of the

consultations you have attended. As indicated above, group consultation is $40/hr. Individual consultation is currently $200/hr.

BECOMING EMDRIA CERTIFIED: After you have completed the training, including the 10 required hours of consultation, you can begin

to work towards EMDRIA CERTIFICATION. If Dr. Manfield is providing consultation to you for this purpose, about half way through the

consultation process (or before), he will ask you to bring in and go over at least one recording (video, audio or transcript) of an EMDR session. This is not a test, but

part of the learning/training process. Reviewing at least one of your EMDR sessions will enable him to point out issues that would not come up in a self-generated account

of your sessions, and will enable him to write you a letter of recommendation with confidence.
