The treatment of a Vietnam veteran with Complex PTSD (strong avoidance defenses and dissociative personality structure), with a 15-year follow-up to treatment. Sixth hour Using AIP methods to treat shame-based depression in clients with dissociative symptoms the method of targeting chronic shame as a psychological defense. EMDR has had a profound positive impact on the lives of many clients and has been shown in more than twenty published trials to be effective in the treatment of PTSD. However, the DSM IV definition of PTSD is focused on the single traumatic incident, and many clients seeking relief in therapy have a damaging traumatic history that extended over repeated events or over long periods of time. The term, Complex PTSD (Herman, 1992, van der Kolk, 2005) has been proposed to describe a pattern of negative effects of prolonged and extreme stress, particularly during childhood. The focus of this workshop is to describe an information-processing model for the treatment of Complex PTSD, including specific EMDR-related therapy tools which may be useful, at different points in therapy, to assist clients in resolving not only dysfunctionally stored traumatic memories, but also psychological defenses, and dissociative symptoms within the context of a dissociative personality structure. Particular interventions will be described which may be useful in assisting clients with dysfunctional attachment styles, defensive avoidance, and/or high vulnerability to dissociative abreaction, chronic shame, and unrealistic idealization of self or of others. Important concepts and particular interventions will be illustrated through video examples and transcripts from therapy sessions. Some brief time will be available for participants to discuss difficult EMDR cases.
