EMDR with Energy Psychology Presenter: Carol Odsess, Ph.D. Workshop Description: Addressing
emotional disturbance effectively is a critical element of EMDR treatment. In EMDR 2nd ed, Francine Shapiro
instructs clinicians to discover during the history-taking phase whether the client can
respond to self-control and relaxation techniques and only plan to use EMDR with those
clients who respond favorably. One goal of the
preparation phase is also for clients to become proficient in relaxation techniques to
deal with high levels of disturbance that may occur between sessions and to assist clients
in regaining emotional balance when material has been incompletely processed.. In
this class, participants will learn the most popular form of Energy Psychology, Emotional
Freedom Techniques (EFT). EFT is a form of
emotional acupressure that combines somatic procedures derived from ancient
Eastern acupuncture systems with Western cognitive strategies. By addressing the
body, mind and emotions simultaneously, emotional activation is rapidly decreased.
This technique assists clients to reduce stress, fear and anxiety, while it
increases feelings of relaxation, resilience and peace. It is also widely used to
decrease the hyperarousal that accompanies trauma. While
rigorous research on Energy Psychology methods is limited to specific issues, anecdotal
evidence supports the use of EFT as a powerful but simple technique that can rapidly
decrease emotional disturbance. In this
workshop, participants will learn the basic EFT technique and how to utilize EFT in the
history-taking, preparation and closure phases of EMDR in ways that maintain fidelity to
the EMDR protocol. The workshop will emphasize
experiential learning of hands-on Energy Psychology techniques and participants will leave
the class with practical tools they can use immediately and can teach to clients for home
use. Program Objectives: Participants
